Belgium avoided a shock defeat in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener after Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to help rescue a 1-1 draw against Egypt on Monday. The match in Seattle saw Egypt take the lead before Lukaku’s late impact helped Belgium earn a valuable point.

Egypt started the game with confidence and shocked Belgium by taking the lead in the 19th minute. Emam Ashour found the net with a powerful strike after Mohamed Salah created the opportunity, giving the African side a dream start.

Belgium struggled to break down Egypt’s defence in the first half. Despite having experienced players like Kevin De Bruyne, they went into the break behind and needed a response after the interval.

Lukaku changes the game

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia turned to Lukaku in the second half, bringing on the striker in the 66th minute. The move immediately changed the match.

Lukaku did not score, but his presence caused problems for Egypt. His run into the box created pressure, and defender Mohamed Hany accidentally turned the ball into his own net to level the match.

The equaliser gave Belgium new energy as they pushed for a winner. Lukaku later came close to scoring, but Egypt held on to secure a point from a strong performance.

Egypt leave with pride

For Egypt, the result was a missed chance to claim a famous World Cup victory, but their performance showed they can compete against top teams. They defended well and caused Belgium problems throughout the match.

Belgium will now focus on their next Group G match, while Egypt can take confidence from earning a draw against one of Europe’s biggest football nations.
