BOI Takes Business Loans Online to Cut Financing Delays

BOI is moving business financing online with MyBOI, a digital portal that lets companies apply for financing and track their applications. The bank expects the platform to increase qualified applications and cut processing delays.

For a business waiting for financing, time can be as important as the money itself. A delayed loan can mean postponed equipment purchases, missed sales opportunities or slower expansion.

Nigeria’s Bank of Industry (BOI) is trying to reduce some of those delays with MyBOI, a digital platform designed to move more of the financing process online.

The platform allows eligible businesses to onboard, complete assessments, submit financing applications and track their progress without relying entirely on physical visits and repeated follow-ups.

What MyBOI changes

Applying for development finance can involve several stages, documents and interactions. Each additional step creates another opportunity for an application to stall.

MyBOI is designed to bring those stages into a single digital process. Businesses can submit information online and monitor where their applications stand.

BOI has set three targets for the initiative:

  • 30% increase in qualified digital financing applications within 12 months

  • 40% reduction in front-end application turnaround time within nine months

  • 60% self-service adoption for new applications within 12 months

The system also uses automated workflows and one-time-password authentication as part of the application process.

Faster does not necessarily mean easier

This is the important distinction.

A digital application can make the process faster without making approval easier.

BOI will still assess creditworthiness, repayment capacity and other credit, legal and compliance requirements. Automation changes how businesses move through the process, not the standards they must meet.

There are also limits to what a digital portal can solve. Funding capacity, credit decisions, risk assessment, documentation and disbursement can still affect how quickly a business actually receives money.

In simple terms, MyBOI can make the road to a financing decision shorter. It cannot guarantee that the destination will be funding.

Why this matters for small businesses

The change could be particularly useful for smaller businesses that may not have dedicated staff to handle financing applications.

BOI has also established digital help desks across its 36 state offices and works with business development service providers that help SMEs prepare financing proposals.

That support matters because not every business is equally prepared for a fully digital process. A business that lacks proper records or struggles to prepare the required documents may still face difficulties, regardless of how simple the portal becomes.

What will show whether it works?

The strongest test of MyBOI will come after the application is submitted.

More digital applications and faster processing would show that the system is improving the front end. But the bigger questions are whether more businesses are actually funded, how long it takes for approved loans to be disbursed and whether the financing produces jobs and business growth.

BOI's own proposed measures include approval rates, time from application to disbursement, the share of smaller and first-time borrowers funded, repayment performance, and the jobs and output generated by financed businesses.

That is where the difference between digitising financing and improving access to capital will become clear.

The bottom line

MyBOI could make one of the most frustrating parts of business financing easier: getting through the application process.

But the real measure of success will not be how polished the platform is or how quickly a form can be submitted.

It will be whether businesses receive financing faster, whether more smaller businesses can access it and whether that capital ultimately translates into production, jobs and growth.

Technology can shorten the process. The results will determine whether it actually improves financing.
