Arsenal Crush Manchester City 3-0 to Win Community Shield and Send Early Title Warning

Arsenal have wasted little time reminding the Premier League that they are not planning to give up their title easily.

The champions thrashed FA Cup holders Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield on Sunday, lifting the trophy at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff and giving Mikel Arteta's side a perfect start to the new campaign.

Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring after just 23 seconds, Kai Havertz doubled Arsenal's advantage before half-time, and captain Martin Odegaard added a third shortly after the restart.

For Manchester City, it was a difficult beginning to the Enzo Maresca era.

Arsenal needed just 23 seconds

If Arsenal wanted to make an early statement, they could hardly have done it more emphatically.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, deployed in midfield, split the City defence with a clever pass that sent Calafiori through. The Italian defender kept his composure and finished past Gianluigi Donnarumma from close range.

The goal came after only 23 seconds, making it the fastest goal in the Community Shield since 1968.

It immediately put City on the back foot.

The response from Maresca's team was better than the scoreline suggested for parts of the first half. Phil Foden forced David Raya into a save from distance, while Erling Haaland also had an opportunity.

But Arsenal remained the sharper side.

Havertz makes it 2-0

Arsenal's second goal arrived in the 27th minute.

Odegaard floated a cross towards the far post, where new signing Christos Tzolis headed the ball back into the danger area.

Havertz rose above Ruben Dias and headed towards goal, with Donnarumma unable to keep the ball out.

That gave Arsenal a two-goal advantage at half-time and left City with a difficult task after the break.

City needed a fast response.

Instead, Arsenal scored again.

Just three minutes into the second half, Tzolis produced another assist, rolling the ball into Odegaard's path.

The Arsenal captain then weaved through the City defence before using a clever dummy to wrong-foot Donnarumma and calmly finish.

3-0. Game over.

Tzolis, making his first appearance in the showpiece fixture, therefore contributed two assists and played a major role in all three Arsenal goals.

What does this mean for Manchester City?

For Maresca, this was a difficult first competitive match in charge of City.

The former Chelsea manager acknowledged that the early goal affected his team and said there were several areas that needed improvement before the Premier League campaign begins.

City captain Ruben Dias was similarly blunt.

He described the performance as “not good enough” but stressed that the match came at the beginning of a new season and that the team would now look ahead.

There is an obvious reason for caution before drawing major conclusions from one match.

The Community Shield is the traditional curtain-raiser, not a league fixture. City have also entered a new era following Pep Guardiola's departure, meaning Maresca is still working to establish his team.

But Arsenal's performance will certainly give their rivals something to think about.

Arsenal look ready to defend their crown

Arsenal enter the new campaign as Premier League champions, having finished seven points ahead of City last season.

The Community Shield victory now gives Arteta's team another trophy and, perhaps more importantly, confidence before the league begins.

Odegaard made Arsenal's ambitions clear after the match.

The captain said the team wants to “do it again” and compete for more trophies, including the Champions League after losing last season's final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

That is the bigger picture.

Arsenal are not simply trying to defend the Premier League title. They are attempting to turn last season's success into the beginning of a sustained period of dominance.

The warning comes with one important caveat

There is an interesting statistic that should keep Arsenal fans from getting carried away.

Only one of the previous 15 Community Shield winners, Manchester City in 2019, went on to win the Premier League title in the same season.

So winning the Community Shield is no guarantee of another league title.

Still, Arsenal's performance was convincing enough to make the result feel more significant than a routine pre-season curtain-raiser.

They were sharper, more cohesive and more dangerous in attack, while City struggled to create enough sustained pressure. Haaland, last season's Golden Boot winner with 27 league goals, was largely quiet and was substituted before the hour mark.

What happens next?

The real test starts now.

Arsenal begin their Premier League title defence at home against Coventry City on August 21, while Manchester City open their campaign against Bournemouth on August 23.

The Community Shield cannot tell us who will win the Premier League.

But it has already given Arsenal something they would have wanted before a ball was kicked in the new season: momentum.

And after a 3-0 demolition of one of their biggest rivals, the message from the champions is pretty clear.
