Cristiano Ronaldo Hints Retirement Could Come After This Season

Cristiano Ronaldo has given his clearest indication yet that his extraordinary football career could be coming to an end.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain says the current season will probably be his last year of football, raising the possibility that one of the most decorated careers in the sport's history could conclude in 2027.

“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” Ronaldo told Vogue in an interview published on Sunday.

The statement does not amount to a formal retirement announcement. Ronaldo's contract with Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr runs until June 2027, meaning he could potentially play through the end of that contract. But his latest comments are more specific than his previous remarks about when he intends to stop playing.

So, is Ronaldo retiring in 2027?

Probably, but Ronaldo has not set a definite retirement date.

He has spoken about retirement before. Last year, he said he expected to continue playing for another one or two years and confirmed that the 2026 World Cup would be his final World Cup.

Now that the tournament is over, he has gone further by suggesting that the 2026-27 season could be the final chapter of his playing career.

Ronaldo's career already contains an extraordinary list of achievements.

But one trophy has remained out of reach: the FIFA World Cup.
