Flamingos Reach U-17 World Cup Semi-Finals After Dramatic Win Over Venezuela
A late penalty from captain Azeezat Oduntan sends Nigeria into the last four for the second time, setting up a meeting with Brazil for a place in the final.

Nigeria's Flamingos have reached the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco after a dramatic 1-0 quarter-final victory over Venezuela.
It was not a comfortable win, but the young Nigerians found a way through in the closing minutes of the encounter.
In the 88th minute, Oluebube Umejiaku was fouled inside the penalty area, and after a VAR review, Nigeria were awarded a penalty. Captain Azeezat Oduntan stepped up in the 89th minute and calmly sent goalkeeper Valeria Rebanales the wrong way, placing her effort into the corner.
The goal secured Nigeria's place in the last four for only the second time in the country's history. The Flamingos previously reached the semi-finals in 2022, when they finished third.
From Opening-Day Defeat to Semi-Finalists
The Flamingos' journey to the semi-finals has been a story of recovery and growing confidence.
Nigeria began the group stage with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, putting pressure on the team to respond in their remaining matches.
They recovered with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico before producing one of their most impressive performances of the tournament, beating defending champions DPR Korea 3-1.
The victory over the reigning champions was particularly significant, ending their unbeaten run in the competition.
Nigeria carried that momentum into the knockout rounds, defeating Mexico 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals before edging Venezuela.
From an opening-day setback to four consecutive victories, the Flamingos have steadily strengthened their position as the tournament has progressed.
Brazil Next: A Different Kind of Test
There is little time to celebrate. Standing between Nigeria and a place in the final is Brazil, a side that has already shown it can survive difficult matches.
In the round of 16, Brazil edged Poland 8-7 on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw. The victory came against the same Polish side that had beaten Nigeria in their opening group match.
Brazil then secured their semi-final place with a 2-1 comeback victory over China in the quarter-finals. After Wu Yichen gave China the lead in the first half, Helena Rodrigues scored twice to turn the match around.
The result sets up an important test for Nigeria, who will need to maintain their defensive discipline while finding ways to trouble Brazil's attack.
A Chance to Make History
Nigeria's only previous semi-final appearance at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup came in 2022 in India, when the Flamingos finished third.
Reaching the final would be a first for the country and would put the team one match away from winning the trophy.
The achievement would also mark another important milestone for Nigerian women's football, particularly at youth level.
Can the Flamingos Go All the Way?
Nigeria has earned its place among the final four. A defeat to Poland was followed by victories over Puerto Rico, DPR Korea and Mexico, before the late winner against Venezuela secured their semi-final ticket.
Brazil will bring attacking confidence and the experience of surviving two testing knockout rounds. Nigeria, meanwhile, will rely on their determination, growing confidence and ability to deliver under pressure.
The semi-final takes place at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Wednesday, November 4. A victory would send the Flamingos into the final for the first time in their history.
