Spanish footballer Jesús de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a second-division match on Monday, November 2.

His club, CD Tenerife, announced his death on Tuesday morning, November 3, saying he passed away at 8:00 a.m. local time at the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The incident occurred during the closing minutes of Tenerife’s match against FC Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. With the score tied at 2-2, De Miguel was chasing a long ball when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his goal to challenge him.

The two players collided, leaving the Tenerife forward unconscious on the pitch. Owono was immediately shown a red card as players from both teams called for medical assistance.

Medical personnel attended to De Miguel for several minutes before he was taken away by ambulance. Spanish media reports said he suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance on the way to hospital and that paramedics resuscitated him. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The match was eventually abandoned in the 108th minute.

His condition deteriorated overnight

Tenerife initially described De Miguel’s condition as stable, despite the seriousness of his injuries.

However, an update issued by the club in the early hours of Tuesday revealed that his neurological condition had worsened.

The club later confirmed his death in an emotional statement.

“Broken with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesús de Miguel Alameda,” the statement said.

The club also expressed its support for his family, friends and supporters, while asking the public to respect the family’s privacy during the difficult period.

Tributes from across Spanish football

News of De Miguel’s death prompted tributes from clubs and football organisations across Spain.

FC Andorra expressed its condolences to his family, teammates and Tenerife, describing the news as devastating. Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, who is the majority shareholder of Andorra, also paid tribute to the player.

Real Madrid and Barcelona released statements expressing sympathy and support for his family and everyone associated with Tenerife.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation also expressed its sadness over his death and announced the postponement of all matches scheduled for Tuesday in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina competitions as a mark of respect.

LaLiga also paid tribute, sharing its condolences with his family, loved ones and club.

A career across Spanish football

Born in Madrid in 1996, De Miguel began his senior career with Leganés B in 2015 before playing for several clubs in Spain’s lower divisions.

His career included spells at Fuenlabrada, Internacional de Madrid, Navalcarnero, Unionistas de Salamanca and Castellón.

He became Castellón’s leading scorer during the club’s promotion campaign to Spain’s second division in 2024, before joining Tenerife in 2025.

He scored 11 goals during the 2025-26 season, helping establish himself as an important attacking option for the Canary Islands club.

His death has left teammates, supporters and the wider Spanish football community mourning the loss of a player whose career had taken him through several levels of the Spanish game.

As tributes continue to arrive, the tragedy has also brought renewed attention to the risks of serious on-field collisions, even in professional football, where medical personnel are present during matches.
