Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin urging a ceasefire and proposing direct face-to-face talks between the two leaders. The appeal was made public on June 4, 2026, and marks one of the most direct public calls for engagement since the start of the war.

The letter calls for an immediate halt in fighting during negotiations and suggests that both sides meet in person at a neutral location to try to break the ongoing diplomatic deadlock.

A Push for a Ceasefire During Talks

In the letter, Zelenskyy states that Ukraine is ready for a full ceasefire for the duration of negotiations.

The proposal is aimed at creating space for meaningful dialogue while reducing continued losses on the battlefield. It reflects Kyiv’s position that any talks should happen alongside a pause in fighting rather than under active combat conditions.

Proposal for Direct Leader-Level Meeting

The Ukrainian president also goes further than general calls for dialogue. He proposes a direct meeting with Putin and suggests setting a clear time and place for talks.

The idea of a face-to-face summit is significant, as direct communication between the two leaders has been extremely limited since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Kremlin Response

According to reports, the Kremlin has acknowledged receiving the letter and said it would issue a response later.

There have also been indications that Moscow is open to the idea of a meeting, including suggestions that talks could take place in Russia. However, Zelenskyy has previously rejected Moscow as a venue, maintaining that any negotiations should occur in a neutral setting.

Ongoing War and Diplomatic Stalemate

The war in Ukraine continues with no comprehensive peace agreement in place. Multiple rounds of diplomatic efforts in recent years have failed to produce a lasting settlement.

Zelenskyy’s latest letter signals a renewed attempt to restart high-level negotiations, even as fighting continues on several fronts.

What Happens Next

At the time of reporting, no direct meeting has been confirmed and no timeline has been agreed.

Attention now turns to whether both sides can move closer to setting conditions for talks, as everyone awaits Putin's response.
