Nicolas Pépé Double Sends Ivory Coast Into World Cup Knockout Stage for First Time
The former Arsenal forward scored both goals as Ivory Coast beat Curaçao 2-0 to make history and book a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds.

Ivory Coast reached the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history after Nicolas Pépé scored twice in a 2-0 victory over Curaçao on Thursday.
The win secured second place in Group E and ended Curaçao's inspiring debut World Cup campaign. It also marked a major milestone for a country that had previously failed to progress beyond the group stage in its three appearances between 2006 and 2014.
Pépé Leads Historic Victory
Pépé gave Ivory Coast an early advantage after capitalising on a defensive mistake to score inside the opening minutes.
The 31-year-old forward struck again in the second half after being played through by Ibrahim Sangaré, calmly finishing to seal the result and send the Elephants into the last 32.
The brace capped a remarkable return for Pépé, who had fallen out of the national team picture over the past year. Left out of the Africa Cup of Nations squad and initially overlooked for March friendlies, he fought his way back into the team and delivered when it mattered most.
Curaçao's Dream Run Comes to an End
Curaçao entered the match hoping to extend one of the tournament's biggest surprise stories.
The Caribbean nation became the smallest country ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup and earned widespread praise after claiming its first-ever World Cup point with a goalless draw against Ecuador.
Despite showing determination and creating several chances against Ivory Coast, Curaçao could not find a breakthrough and bowed out of the tournament after finishing bottom of Group E.
Head coach Dick Advocaat admitted the difference in attacking quality proved decisive, acknowledging the challenge of facing a team with forwards of Ivory Coast's calibre.
Historic Moment for the Elephants
The victory was especially meaningful for head coach Emerse Faé.
Twenty years ago, Faé was an unused member of Ivory Coast's first-ever World Cup squad in Germany. Now he has guided the country to its greatest achievement on football's biggest stage.
Speaking after the match, Faé urged supporters to enjoy the historic qualification before continuing to back the team as it looks to make an even deeper run in the tournament.
Knockout Challenge Awaits
Ivory Coast will now face the runners-up from Group I, with either France or Norway waiting in the Round of 32.
For Pépé, the night represented more than just two goals. It marked a personal redemption story and helped write a new chapter in Ivory Coast's football history as the Elephants finally broke through to the World Cup knockout stage.
