The 44-year-old tennis icon marked her long-awaited return to professional competition on Tuesday with a straight-sets doubles victory at the Queen’s Club Championships in London. Partnering with 19-year-old Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko, Williams defeated third seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe 7-6(2), 6-2 in front of a packed crowd.

The match was Williams’ first professional appearance in nearly four years. Her last competitive outing came at the 2022 US Open, a tournament widely viewed as her farewell to tennis.

A Comeback Fans Never Stopped Hoping For

The excitement surrounding Williams’ return had been building for days, and the former world No. 1 delivered a performance that reminded fans why she remains one of the sport’s biggest names.

While there were signs of rust early on, her trademark power was still there. Williams produced several booming serves, including a string of aces late in the match, helping her and Mboko pull away after a tight opening set.

The victory was even more impressive considering the caliber of the opposition. Melichar-Martinez and Routliffe entered the tournament as the No. 3 seeds and are among the most established doubles players on tour.

A Partnership Across Generations

One of the most compelling storylines was Williams’ partnership with Mboko, a player 25 years younger than her.

The Canadian teenager has emerged as one of the brightest young talents in women’s tennis, and the duo quickly found chemistry on court. Williams praised her partner after the match, saying it felt natural playing together despite never having teamed up before.

Observers noted that Williams often allowed Mboko to take the lead during rallies while stepping in with her experience and powerful serving when the biggest moments arrived.

What Comes Next?

The win immediately sparked fresh speculation about how far Williams’ comeback could go.

She has already committed to playing more doubles events, including a tournament in Berlin, but remains cautious about any potential return to singles competition. Before Queen’s, Williams said she would need more training before considering a singles comeback and stressed that she has nothing left to prove in the sport.

Still, her successful return has naturally fueled talk of a possible appearance at Wimbledon later this summer. Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon singles champion, has not confirmed any plans, but her performance at Queen’s showed she can still compete at a high level.

The Queen Returns

For one afternoon in London, tennis felt familiar again.

Williams stepped back onto the court after a 1,376-day absence and left with the same result that defined much of her legendary career: a win. Whether this comeback lasts a few weeks or much longer, her return has already become one of the biggest stories of the tennis season.
